Define the purpose of the plate
A nameplate may carry manufacturer identity, a model, a serial number or operating information. Determine which fields are required by the product owner and applicable requirements. Do not add ratings, certification marks or compliance statements without the appropriate authorization. Leave room for all mandatory content before allocating space to a logo.
Design for attachment and use
Show mounting holes, attachment method and installation location. Consider whether fasteners, a housing edge or adjacent equipment will obscure any field. Specify the material and finish of the plate and the expected cleaning or exposure conditions. The marking supplier needs those facts to quote the finished item rather than just a graphic on an unspecified sheet.
Control variable information
If each plate carries a different serial number, define the data release and reconciliation process. Keep fixed artwork separate from variable fields. Use a proof that clearly identifies which parts of the layout are examples and which are final values. At receipt, check both the physical plate and the information it carries before attaching it to equipment.
