Separate content from appearance
A square symbol that looks plausible may contain the wrong information. Establish the exact data fields, syntax and any required identifiers. GS1 DataMatrix uses defined GS1 structures; it is not interchangeable with every generic Data Matrix application. Use the applicable specification and current customer requirements rather than copying the appearance of another supplier’s symbol.
Allocate space on the part
After the data is defined, review the symbol size and surrounding clear area with the marking and reading requirements. Surface texture, curvature and installation can affect the practical location. Show the proposed mark area on the drawing. If human-readable text is also required, reserve room for it instead of squeezing it in after the code is approved.
Test the information flow
Read a sample through the intended system and confirm that the decoded data reaches the correct record. This is separate from checking physical mark quality. A receiving system may reject correctly marked data if the record format or mapping is wrong. Assign responsibility for data approval, symbol verification and downstream system testing before production starts.
