Identify the actual material
Stainless steel can be evaluated for different laser marking results, including engraving and annealing. The choice depends on the application. Provide the alloy designation and any relevant treatment rather than asking a supplier to infer the material from appearance. A polished component and a brushed component should not automatically share an appearance reference.
Define the surface restrictions
Identify sealing faces, cosmetic areas, thin sections and any region where marking is prohibited. If the mark needs to be placed close to one of those features, provide enough drawing context to assess it. Say whether a recess is required or whether the goal is identification with limited change to the surface profile. Have the design owner resolve any conflict.
Plan the sample review
A representative sample should have the production finish and follow the same cleaning or treatment sequence. Assess legibility and location separately from corrosion or other performance requirements. A visual sample alone does not validate those properties. Retain the accepted sample identification, drawing revision and process sequence so a repeat order can be compared with the right reference.
